Replacing a garage door spring typically costs between $100 and $300, depending on several factors. Here’s a detailed breakdown of what influences the cost:
Garage door springs play a crucial role in facilitating the lifting and control of garage doors. Given that garage doors typically weigh over 150lbs, it can be challenging to manually lift them or operate them with an opener without some extra assistance. To address this, two types of springs are commonly used: torsion springs and extension springs.
Torsion springs are pre-wound or coiled by certified garage door technicians, storing a certain amount of force within them. These springs naturally tend to unwind, but the weight of the door prevents them from doing so. When an upward force is applied to a closed door, the energy stored in the spring, combined with the applied force, enables the door to open with minimal effort.
Similarly, extension springs fulfill the same purpose, but instead of winding and unwinding, they stretch and compress akin to a slinky toy. When the door is closed, the spring is stretched out and desires to compress, but the weight of the door maintains its balance. By applying a small force in addition to the stored energy in the stretched spring, the door can be opened.
In both cases, as the door is opened, the weight of the door is shifted to the horizontal tracks, resulting in reduced downward force. Conversely, as the door closes, more weight is transferred vertically, while the springs progressively provide increased upward force. This mechanism prevents the door from abruptly crashing down.
In summary, the primary function of garage door springs is to supply supplementary force, ensuring a delicate equilibrium between the door’s weight and the energy stored within the springs.
The value of heavy-duty springs for garage doors depends on several factors, including the specific circumstances and needs of the garage door user. Here are some considerations to help you determine if heavy-duty springs are worth the cost:
Identifying potential problems with garage door springs is important for maintaining the functionality and safety of your garage door system. Here are some signs that may indicate an issue with your garage door springs:
The lifespan of garage door springs can vary depending on several factors, including the type of springs, the quality of the springs, the frequency of usage, and the maintenance they receive. Here are some general guidelines for the expected lifespan of garage door springs:
It’s important to note that these are approximate estimations, and individual circumstances may vary. Factors such as the quality of the springs, the weight of the garage door, climate conditions, and usage patterns can influence the lifespan of garage door springs.
Regular maintenance and inspections can help identify issues early on and extend the lifespan of the springs. Lubricating the springs periodically, ensuring proper tension, and addressing any signs of wear or damage promptly can contribute to their longevity.
Certain types of springs need periodic lubrication. To clarify, if your garage door uses extension springs, no lubrication is necessary. Extensions springs stretch or “extend” resulting in little friction.
On the other hand, torsion springs are wound up or down as the garage door opens or closes resulting in friction as the coils rub against each other. If you have powder coated torsion springs, no lubrication is necessary.
That leaves the more common galvanized torsion spring which does benefit from periodic lubrication. It’s important to use the preferred lithium grease spray or a silicone spray.
Never use WD-40 to lubricate your torsion spring (or other garage door components). WD-40 is a degreaser and will remove the all-important lubricating grease.
To lubricate the torsions springs, with the help of a stepladder, simply spray a reasonable amount of lithium grease across the top of the spring from end to end. After spraying, open and close the door a few times to work the grease in.
We recommend lubricating the torsion springs once or twice a year for optimal spring performance.
Yes it is. The amount of force stored or required in a spring is enough to help lift and lower a garage door weighing several hundred pounds. If the spring snaps or unwinds in an uncontrolled way, any parts improperly attached, like a tightening wrench, can fly off and cause tremendous harm or kill.
Saving a few hundred dollars is not worth the risk, leave garage door spring replacement to the pros!

EXCELLENT Based on 26 reviews Posted on Yelp Bruce C.Verified I would like to thank Ryan who came out and provided me with an estimate to revamp my shop doors. Included new springs, rollers and bearings. No high pressure sales pitch based on commissions! In fact he stated I might get a few more years out of the existing. He sent Randy and Moses out to complete the upgrade and they did a great job and went the extra mile. I would highly advise you use Sawtooth Garage Doors! As a retired General Contractor with 38 years of experience I know a good Company when I see one. Bruce ChinbergPosted on Yelp Philip Reynolds Jr R.Verified After the first call, I received a quick response, fair price and excellent service. I purchased a door opener and needed to have it installed. I asked the technician to perform some preventative maintenance on the existing hardware. He brought it to my attention that the springs were original from 1991 when the house was built. I then had the springs replaced along with a few door rollers with worn out bearings. The only original part that remains is the panels. I essentially have a new door at an amazing price. They even offer Veteran discounts. I highly recommend Sawtooth Garage Doors.Posted on Yelp Christopher K.Verified Solid experience! Spring broke on the garage door, preventing us from opening the door... trapped! Called and spoke with Nelly. She was understanding, professional, had a sense of humor and did everything she could to get someone to the house. I found Nelly to be transparent with pricing. Service crew arrived, did some measurements and zoomed off to get the spring. Quick teamwork and it was replaced, minor adjustments for ideal opening. They both were above average social skills - that is ALWAYS a treat. Side note: zero attempt to upsell me on anything. Only "con"...and I get how this has evolved, but I don't like it...3% surcharge on using a card (credit or debit). I can without reservations, recommend this company and staff.Posted on Yelp Nathan M.Verified Didnt use them, but thats just because another contractor beat them to it. I broke my door the other night, sent them a note and they came out next day. Identical quote to another good contractor at a good value. It was just timing but i wouldnt hesitate to recommend to others!Posted on Yelp Roberta J.Verified yes they came out quickly but don't return calls. we've left 3-4 messages because our garage door is noisy when opening or closing and no one gets back to us. super frustratingPosted on Yelp Wayne S.Verified I requested service on my garage door as it was sticking upon opening. The technician immediately knew what the problem was and advised me on how to resolve this issue. I was very pleased at the on time, prompt and knowledgeable service from Sawtooth Garage Doors.Posted on Yelp Andrea H.Verified From the original phone contact through the service, Sawtooth was personable and professional. Ryan called ahead and arrived on time. He gave a reasonable quote and replaced the weatherstripping in the same morning. I appreciate the recommendations he made to keep our garage door in good working condition. I highly recommend Sawtooth. Give them a callPosted on Yelp Don S.Verified Ryan did a great job resetting my old shop door springs, lubing the door and checking it out well for a reasonable price. Ryan also let me know the risks before as well as the options to replace the springs on both bays. He also helped me with knowledge on my 23 ft wide Dalton garage door so I was more informed what I should do with it as well. I really think this company wants your business!Posted on Yelp Diana G.Verified I highly recommend Sawtooth! Contacted them regarding automatic garage door which was not opening or closing. So pleased to receive same day service- Ryan was very knowledgeable and communicated the issue, the suggested resolve as well as quote. Ryan was amazing. Professional and courteous throughout - customer service in all areas was exceptional. Thank you so much! Don't hesitate to contact Sawtooth!Posted on Yelp Scott W.Verified This is a company that wants to earn your business. My 8-ft door was damaged and needed to be replaced. In addition my 16-ft door had one spring hub that had come loose and was overloading the opener for who knows how long. It was also misaligned, thanks to the original installer who subcontracted through my builder. I worked with Jeramie, partner with Kenny who is very knowledgeable and provided a quote with options to choose. In addition to replacing my 8-ft door with the OEM, I elected to go with two new belt-drive openers (extremely quiet!) and total replacement of the springs/rod assembly on my 16-ft door. Sawtooth also replaced all bearings, lubricated, and aligned that door. I got quotes from other companies and was amazed how much their competitors had marked up their materials and services. Sawtooth's technician did an excellent job on installation. One small mistake was noted and Sawtooth sent him right back out to make it right. This is a very integritable company who stands behind their work, will bill you in arrears, and wants to make sure you are completely satisfied. And they even provided a subcontracted painter to finish the job, painting both doors to match. He also did excellent work. I'm really impressed at how this company is being managed and highly recommend them to anyone. I really enjoyed working with them.
